Bring family photo stories to life using print

It’s all very well having all those fabulous photos on your phone…

Birthday bashes, christenings, weddings – there are big events in life that we photograph at every opportunity, like it’s second nature. Yet, some of the most fulfilling photos to look back on are the ones that capture the small, tender moments with loved ones we might otherwise have forgotten, like candid snaps of parents cooking or siblings decorating the Christmas tree in a new house.

In this digital age, intimate fragments of daily life are easier than ever to capture. Phone cameras account for 92.5% of all pictures taken, so if you’re a consistent smartphone photographer, your device gallery is probably a treasure trove of old photos waiting to be framed, collaged, or put in an album. With print becoming increasingly popular again, it’s time to revisit how you showcase those precious moments.

Three creative ways to revamp your hard copy photo albums

Recreating old photos for a nostalgic feel

Recreating the iconic family photos of your youth as adults is a fun, creative way to reconnect with your past and remind yourself that your inner child always deserves to be part of the present. Scour through old photo albums and pick out one or two that make you smile. Once you know the moment you want to recreate, gather the original subjects, then pick a time and date for the remake!

Curating photo collages

Start by grouping your photos by theme or year. Having a clear focus makes it easier to narrow down the images you want to bring together from the past and present, including favourites hidden deep in your phone gallery. Beach trips are a great place to begin, from building giant sandcastles and creating sandy mermaid tails to posing with ice cream moustaches on the promenade. Most smartphones, including Google Pixel phones and iPhones, can automatically organise photos into albums by date, person, or activity, making it even easier to find images for your collage.

Scrapbook fusion albums

Give a traditional album a more personal twist by combining printed photos with scrapbook details. Pair newer snaps with copies of older family pictures, then add handwritten captions, ticket stubs, postcards, or small keepsakes that lay well to help tell the story behind each moment. You don’t need to fill every space or finish the album in one sitting; leave room for relatives to add their contributions once they’ve sifted through their own memory boxes.

Cameras capture the moment; printing the photo brings it back to life.

It used to be the case that taking your camera’s memory card into a photo shop was the main way to get your pictures developed. Nowadays, the process is much simpler. Once you’ve chosen the digital photos you want developed, explore online photo printing services and find one with a local store. All you have to do is upload your high-resolution images, choose your print size, and pick them up from the shop once they’re ready.

Caring for your print photos checklist

New to owning hard copy photographs? Not to worry, looking after print photos is easier than you think. Here are some tips for photo care that will help to keep them in the best shape over time:

  • Handle prints by their edges with clean, dry hands and keep food and drink away.
  • If you’re planning to store them in an album, try to avoid magnetic or self-adhesive photo albums because their active glues and cheap acidic paper can ruin prints over time.
  • Keep originals somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.
  • Label the photo sleeve, rather than the photograph where possible. If you need to write on the print, turn it over and mark the back lightly near the edge with a soft graphite pencil.
  • Scan irreplaceable photographs and keep separate digital backups.
  • If your photos become damaged, contact a professional photo restoration service for advice before trying to repair them.
