Cruises and gaming – is the art still alive?
It’s hard to be bored on a cruise…
Cruise holidays have always been about combining relaxation with entertainment, but the experience at sea has changed considerably over the years. While casinos were once relatively modest additions to ships, modern cruise lines have transformed them into major attractions. Today, passengers can explore new destinations during the day before heading to a sophisticated gaming floor once the ship sets sail again.
The biggest change is undoubtedly the sheer variety available. Modern cruise casinos can feature hundreds of slot machines alongside blackjack, roulette, craps, poker, and electronic table games, just like you would find at your favourite online casino. For those who prefer something competitive, many ships also organise slot tournaments where passengers play against each other for cash, casino credits and other prizes.
So, is the traditional art of gaming at sea still alive? It certainly appears to be, although it has evolved. Major operators, including Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Celebrity Cruises, have invested heavily in their onboard facilities. Some focus on lively, casual environments, while others offer a more luxurious atmosphere that would not feel out of place in a glamorous land-based venue.
The art of casino community
Technology has also helped advance the experience. Electronic versions of roulette, blackjack, baccarat, and craps are increasingly common because they require less space and offer lower minimum bets. Video poker remains popular too, with familiar games such as Jacks or Better and Deuces Wild available on many ships.
However, the social side of casino cruising remains one of its biggest attractions. Unlike huge resorts where visitors constantly come and go, passengers can spend several days playing alongside familiar faces. This can create a more intimate atmosphere, particularly when everyone is already enjoying the relaxed mood of a holiday.
Cruise companies are encouraging that sense of community through tournaments, special events and rewards programmes. Regular players can collect points through their casino activity and potentially receive benefits ranging from complimentary drinks and dining discounts to cabin upgrades and offers on future cruises.
There are some things to take into consideration
There are, of course, differences between gambling at sea and visiting a traditional casino. Ships have limited space, so they cannot always offer the extensive game selections found at major resorts. Casinos also usually close while vessels are docked and reopen after the vessels return to waters where gaming is permitted.
For passengers interested in casino entertainment, choosing the right cruise therefore requires some research. The size of the gaming floor, the selection of games, the number of days at sea, and the available rewards programme can all influence the experience.
It’s not going away anytime soon
Ultimately, casino cruising has not disappeared beneath the waves. If anything, it has become more sophisticated. The smoky rooms and handful of machines associated with older ships have given way to modern gaming floors, tournaments and loyalty programmes. The art is certainly still alive, but today it comes with ocean views, new destinations and the opportunity to enjoy the journey as much as the games themselves.
