Does simplicity always mean it’s better?

As the digital world continues to rapidly advance, users are turning back to simple options when it comes to entertainment. But why? Discover how, in an environment of near-constant stimulation, we’re being drawn to comfort and convenience rather than complexity.

Why simple entertainment is trending

Several recent cultural trends are driving people back to simpler entertainment.

Nostalgia is playing a major role, currently informing everything from fashion and film to interior design and pastimes. Many Brits committed to screen-free hobbies at the start of 2026 like reading and crochet in response to this trend. Digital versions of classic games like card games, puzzles and retro choices like bingo are celebrating old-fashioned favourites in new formats.

At the same time, AI fatigue has started to set in. Sitting behind almost all digital technology, AI is improving convenience but feels controlling when it comes to choice, making platforms over-saturated with soulless, hyper-personalised content. This has triggered demand for authenticity and human connection, where familiar films and shows fit right in. Simple game formats also encourage more conversation and connection during play.

The benefits of quick, easy and familiar formats

Simple entertainment succeeds for many reasons, despite being decades behind what technology is capable of today.

The first is that it’s easy to learn, removing barriers to connection and joy. Forget challenging controller combinations and complicated rules – you can pick up and settle into these formats quickly for more hours of enjoyment. You also remove other kinds of barriers, such as requiring consoles and high-resolution screens or high-speed internet to facilitate entertainment.

Consider online games like keyboard-controlled quests and digital versions of classic casino games and similar activities like requiring minimal interaction. These can be played on any device and are easy to dip in and out of whenever time allows. Features such as bingo promotions add value and excitement without complicating gameplay.

Easy-to-understand entertainment also reduce decision fatigue, which is a common complaint in the fast-moving world we’re navigating today. When you already know how something works, you’re instantly in the moment. That’s why a familiar puzzle game during a train journey or a favourite streaming series after work can feel more rewarding than searching endlessly for something new.

Why simplicity enhances rather than limits entertainment

Some people assume that simple entertainment lacks depth, but the opposite is often true. When you remove friction with choice and ways to play, you create more space to enjoy the experience itself.

Simple gaming formats makes games feel more inclusive and inviting for people of different ages and abilities. They’re also easier to make accessible, such as with narrated instructions and voice-controlled actions or the option of different difficulty modes.

The same principle applies with streaming platforms. Having clear navigation and a wider choice of recommendations, built around recognisable mechanics, helps users feel more comfortable and confident when managing online entertainment. The option of downloading files to use offline is extending the reach of online entertainment, providing more flexibility with where, when and how activities like films, tv shows, audiobooks and podcasts can be enjoyed.

How to stay safe when exploring online

Safety should be a priority when navigating any online space. AI is supporting cybercriminals in more effective cyberattack strategies even as it’s improving user safety. Maintaining awareness and care is key to staying protected.

Know how to recognise reputable websites, such as looking for the safety certificate displayed in the URL, browsing independent company reviews, checking for licensing information and ensuring payment portals are secure. Using personal cybersecurity software on your devices can help alert you to and prevent you from falling foul of potential dangers.

You can also protect yourself by setting personal limits when using platforms. Have a dedicated budget to put towards games and streaming subscriptions and utilise platform safety features like time limits to maintain control and keep online entertainment enjoyable.

Be most careful with personal data, only providing this when required and ensuring it’s kept secure in a password-protected account, secured by two-factor authentication. Be wary of people in online chatrooms requesting sensitive information. Even having your name, location and age can help cybercriminals facilitate convincing attacks or successfully impersonate you in an identity fraud attempt.
